30 years of sustainable financing and positive impactOUr next chapter starts today, with you

‍Alterfin, a resilient tree withstanding the seasons 🌳

For 30 years, we have seen how adequate financing can be key in empowering underserved communities and preserving the ecosystems we depend on.

Our cooperative has weathered storms, adapted to changing climates, and continued to grow—supported by a community of committed partners and cooperative members who firmly believe in collective action.

As we reach this milestone, we invite you to be part of the next chapter.

With every new partner, every shared resource, and every euro (re)invested, our impact multiplies—just like a tree producing seeds that give rise to new life.

We know that together, we can ensure that Alterfin’s branches continue reaching those who need them most.

From Laos to fair trade markets

For small coffee farmers in remote parts of Laos, finding buyers who pay a fair price can feel almost impossible. That's why many of them join cooperatives. On the fertile Bolovens Plateau in southern Laos, the CPC cooperative buys the harvests of around 700 coffee farmers. Thanks to the cooperative, its producers have been able to improve the quality of their coffee, gain access to fair trade markets, and in the process, transform their livelihoods.

Alterfin & Rikolto: "We need to revive people’s faith in development cooperation”

Thirty years ago, Rikolto helped found Alterfin, responding to the huge lack of financing for small-scale farms. And today? Alterfin’s model remains (unfortunately) nearly unique in the financial world, says Caterina Giordano, Chief Impact Officer at Alterfin. At the same time, Chris Claes, Director of Rikolto, sees that a clear shift in mentality has taken place in agriculture and food.

Alterfin & Humundi : “We exist for the same reason”

How can we reawaken a sense of hope in the current political climate? Benoît De Waegeneer, General Secretary of Humundi (formerly SOS Faim), and Caterina Giordano, Chief Impact Officer at Alterfin, discuss this issue in this joint interview. And they seem to agree on the answer: people must be given the means to act. The interview was also an opportunity to look back on the 30-year synergies between our organizations, both of which are committed to the agricultural transition and solidarity financing.

When Being First Makes All the Difference

In western Côte d’Ivoire, the cooperative SOCAK KATANA had everything needed to succeed: committed producers, a growing membership base, and an ambitious first export contract. All signs seemed green. All... except one: access to financing.

COPAK and 30 Years of Alterfin

One of the most moving moments while celebrating 30 years of impact was undoubtedly the conversation with Dimitri Moreels (CEO) and Berthinic Kikwaya (Operations Manager) of COPAK – our partner since 2018, based in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their mission goes far beyond producing fair trade cocoa and chocolate. It’s about strengthening local communities in one of the world’s most fragile regions.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS

Thirty years ago, a hopeful young Hugo Couderé planted a seed—an initiative driven by the belief
that finance can be a force for good.

Like any young tree, our cooperative needed care, patience, and commitment.

At a time when ethical investing was still in its infancy, the newly founded Alterfin became a pioneer in the sector.

"We were still a - strange animal - for more mainstream financial institutions," shares Hugo.

With a dedicated team working passionately toward a shared goal of creating positive impact, the cooperative kept reaching higher. Its branches extended further and further, supporting a growing number of social enterprises across Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

Over the decades, our roots have deepened, strengthening our commitment to fairer access to finance.

💡 Meet our founder.

In this interview, Hugo Couderé, founder of Alterfin, reflects on the early days, the challenges, and what still makes Alterfin unique in 2025.
